Article: You Are What You Eat... And THINK!

Updated: Feb 8, 2023

Miami has such a rich and mixed culture you can basically keep changing the way you live every week.

There are so many interesting lifestyles walking around the streets that the idea of changing your lifestyle seems very exciting. One of the lifestyles that caught my attention since I moved to the Magic City is "The Fitness Lifestyle".

Just go down to SOBE and watch all these fit people showing off their perfectly shaped bodies and carrying their Wholefoods Store bags, you instantly think “I want this”! But this healthy lifestyle can sometimes end up making us unhealthy. How so? Let me show you what I am talking about and I am sure you are going to relate to this right away! Back in the day eating was just a natural habit. I do not recall growing up listening to people talking about counting carbs or avoiding French fries or any other junk food in general, there was not even such term as “Junk Food”, but for quite some time now it is all about what you eat.

Of course it is great to take care of our health and make smart decisions when it comes to food, but there is a fine line between watching what you consume and being consumed by the watch. I remember when working out and eating well were considered healthy habits and that was all we had to do, but now working out and eating well have become such complex subjects with so many branches that we get lost in the way.

Avoiding sugar, watching your cholesterol, going to the gym have now become a million different diets and workouts, with so many options and different ways to change your lifestyle it became hard to actually do it. What before was so simple is now full of tricks and doubts, having so many choices made it difficult for us to choose! What I am saying is that the whole healthy lifestyle has become UNHEALTHY! Since when do we have to live for this and this only? A healthy diet is supposed to be part of your life, “part” of it but not your whole life! It is tricky when we decide to change, of course it is great to be focused and determined but when do we know we are not obsessed? How many times do we have to try to actually achieve? Am I doing this right?

Let’s simplify, so ok, I am going to replace my French fries with a bean salad and workout three times a week, simple, right? BUT then you suddenly catch yourself asking “Are these beans organic?”; “Is this meal gmo free?”; “Is this work out the most effective?”; “Was this program created by that celebrity personal trainer that transforms bodies and lifestyles so drastically that now has become the hottest fitness guru?”; “Should i eat every three hours or should i fast?; Which one is more effective?; If I gain muscle and lose fat will my weight still go down? Should i just do cardio then? Should i lift when trying to lose weight or just stick to cardio?” Please just stop!

Making good decisions and changing your lifestyle has nothing to do with obsession or dedicating your whole life to this matter ONLY! For anything in this life to actually be effective it has to be DOSED, BALANCED. The simple act of trading your French fries for a bean salad is already a smart decision, the simple fact that you are now working out three times a week is already a life changing decision, your body and health will catch up.

Choosing healthy meals and exercising will change your looks and diagnosis, what we have to keep in mind is the BALANCE, because if you start to go crazy 24/7 OBSESSED with something you are going to  get sick of it and simply stop and go back to your old lifestyle.

The secret is simple: you just have to SIMPLIFY things. CHANGE your diet according to your REALITY. Forget the fitness gurus and magical diets, these are only temporary comforting ideas, and just like any obsession they will someday just DISAPPEAR.

What you need is to take a BALANCED STEP AND NOT OBSESS OVER A CONVENIENT IDEA. Work out doing exercises that FIT YOU, do different workouts so you are not going to get bored and DO NOT OBSESS with how much time you spend at the gym or how many calories you are burning, what really will be effective is the fact that now you are working out and you will have results!

Choose healthy meals over junk food but ALLOW YOURSELF TO CHEAT MEALS and pleasures now and then, you are choosing a new lifestyle YOU ARE NOT QUITTING LIFE! Take care of your health and your body, but keep in mind that it does not work when you eat healthy but think unhealthy, overthinking is as bad as overeating and the results are the same: LACK OF BALANCE!

Be careful when “googling” or “binging” information about diets and exercises, “real body transformation” videos on YouTube, when you mix ALL THE INFORMATION you GET LOST!

Think of your brain as a bowl and every new information as carbs, sugar and bad fats, every time you add something it only gets worse!

So STOP and remember WE ARE WHAT WE EAT… AND THINK!
