Fashion Feature: 10 Accessorizing Rules For Him

Updated: Apr 25, 2023

Fashion, a small word but with many different meanings.

To some people fashion is a form of communication, a way to express one’s identity and personality; to other people fashion means luxury, they simply ignore the fact that fashion has nothing to do with money, but with style and taste.

I know a lot of rich people with awful taste, they dress terribly and think they are as stylish as they come, and I also know a lot of broke-ass people that look like a million bucks every time they step out of their homes.

Style is something natural, spontaneous, you either have it or you don’t. Same goes for taste. You can’t buy style or taste. What you can do is to improve your style with some tasteful options.

Dressing well is only the first step. You must know how to accessorize, and don’t fool yourself thinking that adding a bracelet and a necklace will do trick, you have to know HOW to accessorize tastefully.

In this Listicle (or should I say Richcle?), I’m giving you 10 tips on how to accessorize properly, getting the accessories to make (not break) your final look. Some additions here, some substitutions there, can sometimes make all the difference.

Learn how to accessorize better, learn what the accessories say about you, and learn how to avoid some minor mistakes that can have a major effect on your look.

Express your personality and show your style, but don’t forget to keep it tasteful!

1. Watch your Watch!

Watches range from cheap options to luxury timepieces. You don’t have to spend thousands of dollars to get a decent watch, just take a few aspects into consideration to make the right choice.

Choose something that matches your personality and satisfies your needs. If you are more traditional and only need a regular watch, simply focus on the box, the bands, and the comfort.

If you are a tech lover, consider a smart watch that is compatible with your smartphone (obviously) and offers a variety of bands, so you can play around with colors, styles,

and outfits.

Rule: Be careful when playing with colors, be mindful of what you’re wearing and try to get a neutral piece you can easily match with most colors.

If you are into luxury watches, be careful not to over do it. Most of us love diamonds and gold for timepieces, but there is a fine line between luxurious and tacky. There is nothing wrong with gold watches, but you do have to be extra careful not to get something that will make you look like a mafia boss!

Focus on elegance and sobriety. When it comes to gold watches minimalism is everything! Gold is already super shiny and flashy, if you add more elements to it you might end up with a tacky and over-the-top piece.

Not sure if the gold watch you want is over the top? Go partially gold! Get a watch with gold details. Keep it sober and clean. Manufacturers will do whatever it takes to make watches cost as much as possible, but oftentimes a 300-hundred-dollar black and gold watch looks better than a 5-thousand-dollar iced gold watch that weights more than a puppy, and makes you look like a douche!

2. Lord of the Rings

Rings are historical, meaningful, and beautiful accessories. They symbolize sacred unions, achievements, and even brotherhoods and sisterhoods.

Symbolism aside, many of us have a bunch of rings we like to use simply to accessorize, to complete our look. Keep the rule below in mind and rock this accessory.

Rule: Always keep color matching and other accessories in mind. Be mindful of the colors of the other accessories you’re wearing.

Another important aspect to keep in mind is the gem. Choose only one color per hand. White diamonds are a great choice because the color doesn't clash with other colors (one of the reasons why white diamonds are so popular).

Last but not least, be careful with the number of rings you’re wearing. Wear a ring on every other finger, otherwise not only you kind of kill their meanings, but you also make it difficult for any of them to get the attention they deserve once there are so many.

3. Get the Arm-Party Started!

Have you ever heard the term “Arm-Party”?

It’s basically a term that refers to wearing a bunch of different bracelets altogether.

I absolutely LOVE the hipster look arm-party gives you; however, not everyone is pleased with the idea of wearing a bunch of bracelets altogether.

If you are one of them, I suggest wearing two thin gold bracelets, one Figaro and one iced bracelet. They add life and style to your wrist and you’re only wearing two pieces. Simple, tasteful, and effective!

Rule: Keep two rules in mind: first, be careful not to get too excited and end up with a heavy wrist, covered in thick gold chains, and looking like a rapper-wannabe!

Secondly, be mindful of the other colors you’re wearing. Call me old fashioned but I don’t think a gold Figaro looks elegant next to a bunch of other bracelets in different colors (just saying).

4. Scarfaboulous

Scarves help you serve an intellectual/artistic vibe, but simple aspects like color harmonization and prints can break -instead of make- your look.

Make the right choices and go from basic bitch to fashionista in a second.

Rule: Scarves can also make you go from basic bitch to either hobo-fashion or grandpa style, so be careful with the fabrics and prints you’re choosing!

In my opinion having at least three solid color scarves is mandatory; they are neutral and timeless.

I absolutely love prints too, just make sure the print matches your personality and the rest of your look.

5. Breaking the Chains

Chains have been all-rage for quite some time (specially the gold ones), but they are as tricky as they are beautiful.

Oftentimes a simple and small silver chain with a cross pendant with white diamond details looks classier and more elegant than tick and iced gold chains that make you look like a gangster wannabe.

Rule: Be careful with iced gold chains.

Make sure the chain is not too thick, because in this case “too thick is tacky”.

If you decide to go with a silver chain, choose a nice-looking diamond pendant to go with it, otherwise you might end up with a flat and faded look.

So keep in mind: not too tick when it’s gold, not too flat when it’s silver.

6. Rooftop Party

Headgears are historical items. Their uses vary from religious, professional, and security purposes, to sun protection and fashion. A nice headgear can add that definitive element to your look.

THE perfect accent piece in my humble opinion.

Rule: Know the purpose of your headgear and wear it accordingly.

If you’re wearing a baseball cap because you’re going to practice a sport or a physical activity then I’m all for it, but if you’re going to the park to sip wine and listen to an outdoor live symphony, then a panama or a fedora would be the ideal pick.

Simply put: Don’t wear a fedora to play sports, don’t wear a baseball cap to watch a live symphony in concert.

7. Start Bagging

Crossbody bags are trending on a level we have never seen before.

I absolutely love crossbody bags, but style must be taken into consideration when choosing one.

Bags have the purpose of carrying our belongings AND supplementing our look, so style is a key factor here.

Rule: Be careful when choosing your crossbody bag. If you need a bag you will wear with formal clothes, a compact crossbody messenger bag is the perfect choice.

If you need one for either sports or leisure, choose a bag in just one solid color (no prints or details). Stay away from colorful prints, most of them make you look like you’re stuck in your teenage years!

Remember, you are a grown ass man buying a crossbody bag, not a teenager following TikTok trends trying to fit in.

8. Sunglasses (Not Sporting Goods)

Sunglasses have more than one purpose, they protect your eyes and skin from sun damage, they are used to aid the practice of some sports, AND they also give you style (not always the good kind).

For some reason some people seem to forget sunglasses have more than one purpose and consider them to be “sporting goods”.

Keep the rule below in mind and make sure you’re not one of “those people” that see sunglasses as sporting goods.

Rule: ALWAYS be mindful of WHY you’re going to wear sunglasses before you pick a pair to put on. When it comes to sunglasses, we match colors AND purposes.

It’s okay to wear sports sunglasses when you are actually practicing a sport! If you’re not going to practice any sports, choose a nice pair of wayfarers or aviators or other frame style you might like but please, STAY AWAY from the sports sunglasses when you're not practing a sport!

A Dior shirt or a Tom Ford tie would NEVER look good with a pair of Oakley’s Juliet (just saying).

9. I Like What I See

Eyeglasses can help you look sexier or destroy your sex appeal altogether, so attention must be paid!

Rule: First aspect to consider is the shape of your face; make sure the frame you chose is a good fit.

Be careful when choosing the frame, I personally love oversized sunglasses but not oversized eyeglasses. Oversized frames look good to SOME people, make sure it’s a good fit for YOUR face shape before going big.

Color is also very important, if you like variety and intend to have a bunch of different options go for it! But if you are one of those people that wear one single pair of eyeglass for years (like me) then make sure you get a neutral color that goes with any outfit.

10. Say No to Sucky Socks

Socks are one of the most underrated accessories in men’s fashion. Socks give men the opportunity to add that little touch of personality to a formal look.

Follow this simple rule and add that final touch of glory.

Rule: It’s okay to show your personality, but careful not to give the impression you want to join the circus!

Don’t get political and don’t try to spread messages through your socks (like your hate for Donald Trump or your love for Doritos). Be taken seriously, don’t look like a clown. You want people to find you stylish, you don’t want them to avoid you or not take you seriously.

Polka dots, stripes, and checks give your look that necessary touch to break the pattern and highlight your outfit with elegance, style, and personality.
