Column Archives: The Green Way - August/2020

Updated: Jan 24, 2022

Dear (((EveryBit))) Readers,

August is here. An extremely hot month (specially in Florida!) and the month that we celebrate one of God’s most pure and lovable creations: dogs!

This is the perfect time to talk about the horrific and evil “Yulin Dog Meat & Lychee Festival”, a barbaric event that should be banned immediately! And guess what? YOU can help us ban it! I this issue, I am going to talk about this evil event and what you can do to help us end it for good.

In August we also celebrate “Potato Day”, and let’s be honest: who doesn’t LOVE potato? To help you celebrate “Potato Day” properly, in this issue I’m sharing a delicious, mouth-watering “Garlic Butter Cheesy Potatoes” recipe. Enjoy!

A Glance at Vegetarianism: The Yulin dog meat and lychee festival in yulin china, is an event that starts on June 21st of every year during the summer solstice and it lasts for 10 long horrifying days in which 10,000–15,000 dogs (as well as cats) are tortured and then consumed. However, it is estimated 25 million dogs are stolen, sold, bought, and eaten every year with the illegal dog and cat meat trade. A larger percentage of these dogs consist of pets stolen right from their loving families. The rest of the dogs are captured strays from the streets and some are even pets that are no longer wanted by their owners who sell them to butchers. After these animals are stolen, bought, or captured they are then transported for days without any food or water, crammed in tiny cages together so tightly that they are unable to even move.

At the Yulin festival, throughout those days, these animals will be hung, burned, skinned, boiled, torched, dismembered, electrocuted and beaten...ALIVE..out in the streets for public view. But If that isn't bad enough, they intentionally torture these animals in front of the other animals in order to create even more stress and fear. The belief behind the torturing and slaughtering them while still ALIVE, is because the people of Yulin believe the more adrenaline and fear that runs through the blood, the more tender and better tasting the meat will be.

Barbaric, horrific, and extremely evil, isn’t it? But there is something you can do about it! Visit the link below to sign a petition to ban this inhumane “festival”, you can also google the words “Yulin dog meat festival petition” to view and sign other petitions and help us put an end to this devilish event!

Quote of the Month: “No animal needs to die in order for me to live. And that makes me feel really good” – Howard Lynan.

Recipe: “Garlic Butter Cheesy Potatoes”.

This recipe is simple, delicious, and perfect to celebrate “Potato Day” properly! I recommend pairing a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon with this dish.

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 lb. new or small potatoes

  • 1/4 c. butter, melted

  • 1/4 c. extra-virgin olive oil

  • 3 cloves garlic, minced

  • Kosher salt

  • Freshly ground black pepper

  • 1 c. shredded vegan mozzarella

  • 1/2 c. freshly grated vegan Parmesan

  • 1/4 c. finely chopped parsley

Directions:

Preheat oven to 375° and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.

Make small slits in each potato, like an accordion, making sure not to cut all the way through. Place potatoes on a large sheet pan.

In a small bowl, whisk together melted butter, olive oil and garlic. Brush mixture over potatoes then season with salt and pepper. Bake for 20 minutes, until the slits are starting to separate and the potatoes are beginning to turn golden.

Brush the potatoes with more of the melted butter mixture then sprinkle mozzarella and Parmesan on top. Bake for another 23 to 25 minutes, or until the potatoes are crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. Garnish with parsley and serve warm. Happy Potato Day!
